“May I?” he asked, gesturing to the chair.
I wasn’t sure whether he was insinuating he wanted to sit down or whether he wanted to take the chair away.
Either way, I shrugged and gave him an open palm signal.
He sat down.
His smile unnerved me. I knew who he was. He was one of the most important and senior members of the company. I wished he’d go away. I liked being anonymous and him being there was drawing attention to both of us.
“How do you like working here?” he asked.
I didn’t know what to say. How did he know who I was? Why did he even care who I was?
“Oh, you found her.” One of my co-workers and subordinates came over and grinned at him and then at me before turning to me and saying, “He said he wanted to meet you after I said how great you are.”
I didn’t know what to say. Why would he say that? And why would a man this powerful want to meet me?
I was suspicious but also very flattered. I hated that I felt that way. I needed to play it cool but the intense way he was staring at me had reduced me to a bumbling and very gawky teenage girl.
I was smitten.
