“That’s my spot.”
“Oh sorry!” I said. I was new here and didn’t know where everyone and everything fitted in just yet.
I moved my stuff and he sat down.
I wondered what his name was.
“I’m Heather, what’s your name?” I asked.
He looked at me strangely. “David.”
I sat there tapping my feet together and wondered if I should ask him another question. I thought making friends would be easy but it wasn’t.
“Can I borrow this?” someone else asked him, holding up a bucket.
He gave them the same look he’d given me and grunted with what I guessed was a yes.
This playground stuff was hard.
Worse than that, we weren’t kids anymore; we were adults in a staff room at a school.
Some things never changed.
