227. Trash Day:
As a garbage collector it’s my job to take what people have thrown out and dispose of it for them properly. I guess technically that’s my job description, but I prefer to think of myself as a, ‘collector of garbage.’
This means that rather than the type of garbage collector who simply throws everything away without a second thought, I consider there to be, ‘treasure,’ in all garbage. I’m not just talking about things that I would consider to be worth something, as in simply the sentimental value, I’m talking legitimate money-wise. In my time as a garbage collector I’ve found a cast away diamond engagement ring, a Picasso original and a pair of never worn Manolo Blahniks. Crazy!
I have, however, found that it’s what people consider to be worthless or too ugly to be the sort of stuff I like. Maybe I’m one of those people who can see the beauty in everything. I’m not sure. But I do know that even though I might spend my days wading through shit, sometimes literally, I will always be rewarded in some way.
I really do love my job, especially on trash day.
